Charles Allen was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, and came of age in Orange and East Orange. Suspicious of the destruction he had witnessed among black men, he started looking for answers. His research led him on a remarkable journey through history that's become the subject of his controversial novel, The Gangsta Prophecy.
