First Sunday in October
Title:First Sunday in October
Author: Wanda B. Campbell
C&B Price: $14.00

Check Out

In times when filth is all around, people are swimming in the muck and mire, it is refreshing to read a book such as First Sunday in October. Campbell tell a compelling story of how GODís redemption and one's own personal self love/strength will always be enough to carry one through life's trials and tribulations.
The story's heroine Julia Simone is a self made woman who has been through some things yet remains close to GOD. She meets Reggie Pennington, a pastor of a successful church, who seems to stir up emotions that she believes he does not share with her.
Filled with honest and real situations that the reader can identify with, Campbell compels the reader to actually walk a mile in these charactersí shoes. Campbell does an outstanding job of demonstrating real family dynamics and how important family is to one's personal growth.
While there is a definite spiritual tone to this book, Campbell tells a relevant story without coming off too preachy. I am looking forward to the sequel!

Breathe Again
Title:Breathe Again
Author: Lavinia B. Masters

I am always a proponent for books that seek to help the reader overcome traumatic experiences. I was very excited when I received Breathe Again by Lavinia B. Masters.
In Breathe Again, Masters shares her experience in a way that makes the reader feel as if it is happening to him/her. We also walk hand in hand with Masters as she recounts how she processed her attack. Masters shares with the reader realistic information about sexual attacks and organizations that can assist with solving cases.
The most important part of this book is how Masters shares her journey from being a victim to being victorious in GOD. What I found really refreshing is that with each step, the reader was able to relive Mastersí transition. In living her transition, the reader is able to make their own. This is one of the few books that I read that had a strong underlying religious theme that did not sound preachy.

Second Chance is the main character in Hold On Be Strong. This brother really is at a point in his life where he is going to have to make some definite decisions about his life. Allen is his best friend and has always been there for him, however, Second is beginning to question whether Allen is the best person for him to be hanging around.
Jaeyel Imes method of captivating the reader is solid. He gives just enough drama so that you are compelled to continue to turn the pages, but not too much to overwhelm the reader. I can see why this novel inspired the Online Web Drama.
I look forward to reading more from this author.

Hope for the Brokenhearted
Title:Hope for the Brokenhearted
Author: Todd Cook
C&B Price: $12.00

Check Out

This book is a self-help manual for survivors of abuse. I found this book to be a clear and concise explanation for the manifestations of the side effects of abuse. This book offers a practical look at scripture and attempts to provide answers to the problems and struggle that survivor's face each day. Todd Cook has written a book that not only can be useful to survivors of abuse, but anyone who struggles with low self-esteem and lack of self-respect due to past tragedies.
After reading this book, I shared it with people that I knew that were survivors of abuse in an effort to get a more realistic view of its effects. Each person was refreshed and renewed after reading the sections that I shared with them. Todd Cook is definitely using his pastoral and theological experience for good. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is striving to realize his or her greatness in GOD.

Blood & Water
Title:Blood & Water
Author: Linda Armstrong-Miller
C&B Price: $15.00

Check Out

When I read the book summary on the back of this book, I expected a whole different story to unfold. I was pleasantly surprised at how the story actually ended up unfolding. This story is centered among 3 main characters: Sam Rivers, Lisa Rivers and Zach Rivers. It is clear early on that Sam and Lisa have problems in the parent-child relationship. However, Sam has to learn a hard lesson about decisions that we make when a decision he makes adversely affects Lisa. He is forced to take a hard look at his relationship with her and Zach, as well as, all the relationships that he has had in his life. Through a series of both supernatural and natural events, the ties are tested in all three relationships.

Armstrong-Miller has done a masterful job at weaving a believable tale with just a hint of the supernatural that makes you think of similar situations that you, yourself might have been in. After reading this book, I thought about my own family relationships and made a clear commitment to love and honor those who are dear to me.

Excellent novel! Congratulations to Linda Armstrong-Miller for a job well done. I look forward to reading her future works.

Paperback: 227 pages

We are invited into the worlds of Barbara and Beverly, both women in their early 20s; their story is set in the 70s and 80s. Barbara learns a difficult lesson about love when she is abandoned during her sixth month of pregnancy. Beverly is widowed as a result of her boyfriend being killed during a bank robbery. Both women are thrust into the world of being a single parent. Shellman gives us an intimate look at the lives of both women. Any woman whether she is a mother or not, can relate to the trials and tribulations of each woman. Though the story was kind of slow in the beginning, Shellman weaves a believable and realistic tale.

This story is relevant because it is representative of the life that many women are leading today. In this novel, the concepts of ?striving for greatness and being the best you can be? are ringing loud and clear. I think that Shellman is on his way to becoming a powerful and riveting writer.

Chyna Black
Title:Chyna Black
Author: Keisha Ervin
C&B Price: $13.00

Check Out

I am not normally into urban novels; I find sometimes that the stories can be drowned out by very specific details about things that don?t make the story more interesting. However, the novel Chyna Black pleasantly surprised me.

This coming of age story about Chyna Danea Black is both intriguing and engaging. Even if you did not grow up in an urban area, any woman can relate to the growing pains that she experiences. The most interesting are the life lessons, which emphasizes the importance of accepting responsibility for one?s choices.

Chyna Black goes through a transformation right before our eyes. She meets Tyreik, who proceeds to change her very existence. She is forced to learn the tough lesson about love. She also learns about the importance of true friendship among women. With her life in a whirlwind, she becomes determined not to make the same mistakes twice. This is an excellent read for urban fiction lovers and those new to the genre.

Title:Menage's Way
Author: Victor Martin
C&B Price: $9.00

Check Out

I found Menage's Way to be a bit overshadowed by the constant sex scenes. I think the plot and characters were strong enough to build an interesting story without so many sex scenes. While I am no master at the drug dealing game, from my research, the content seems to be realistic and believable. Menage Unique Legend is the main character. We travel with him through his life of Benjamins, name brand everything and promiscuity. This combination proceeds to turn his life upside down. One this journey, he learns that material possessions and easy sex is not a part of obtaining true love and a fulfilling life.

At the end of this journey, he finds himself and redemption, but at what cost?
