In times when filth is all around, people are swimming in the muck and mire, it is refreshing to read a book such as First Sunday in October. Campbell tell a compelling story of how GOD’s redemption and one's own personal self love/strength will always be enough to carry one through life's trials and tribulations.

I am always a proponent for books that seek to help the reader overcome traumatic experiences. I was very excited when I received Breathe Again by Lavinia B. Masters.

Second Chance is the main character in Hold On Be Strong. This brother really is at a point in his life where he is going to have to make some definite decisions about his life. After the death of his mother, his outlook on life really changes. He struggles to maintain relationships with his oldest child?s mother, his half-brothers and his best friend Allen.

This gritty yet realistic novel takes the reader on a journey through the personal development of the main character Dareese A.K.A. Dollar. Dollar is committed to taking care of his family after the abandonment of his father. After a robbery turns into murder, Dollar finds himself exactly where he does not want to be…. away from his family. During his incarceration, the mysterious "Romeo" befriends Dollar who decided to take Dollar under his wing to teach the new 'pup' some things about the streets. "Romeo" has a shocking deal that Dollar simply can not refuse. Dollar is given another chance at redemption only to find that the life he shut out while incarcerated has changed greatly. Once on the outside, Dollar decides to put to use the information that was shared with him by "Romeo". In no time at all, Dollar is drunk with power and makes choices that not only affect him but those he is supposed to care about. In the end, his whole world comes crashing down with Dollar thinking did I make the right decisions?

This book is a self-help manual for survivors of abuse. I found this book to be a clear and concise explanation for the manifestations of the side effects of abuse. This book offers a practical look at scripture and attempts to provide answers to the problems and struggle that survivor's face each day. Todd Cook has written a book that not only can be useful to survivors of abuse, but anyone who struggles with low self-esteem and lack of self-respect due to past tragedies.

When I read the book summary on the back of this book, I expected a whole different story to unfold. I was pleasantly surprised at how the story actually ended up unfolding. This story is centered among 3 main characters: Sam Rivers, Lisa Rivers and Zach Rivers. It is clear early on that Sam and Lisa have problems in the parent-child relationship. However, Sam has to learn a hard lesson about decisions that we make when a decision he makes adversely affects Lisa. He is forced to take a hard look at his relationship with her and Zach, as well as, all the relationships that he has had in his life. Through a series of both supernatural and natural events, the ties are tested in all three relationships.

We are invited into the worlds of Barbara and Beverly, both women in their early 20s; their story is set in the 70s and 80s. Barbara learns a difficult lesson about love when she is abandoned during her sixth month of pregnancy. Beverly is widowed as a result of her boyfriend being killed during a bank robbery. Both women are thrust into the world of being a single parent. Shellman gives us an intimate look at the lives of both women. Any woman whether she is a mother or not, can relate to the trials and tribulations of each woman. Though the story was kind of slow in the beginning, Shellman weaves a believable and realistic tale.

Still Sheisty re-introduces us to Epiphany, Keisha and Shana. These three young women are determined, to get that money no matter who gets hurts, not even themselves. Each woman experiences her own brand of hurt. Epiphany is dealt a near death blow, Keisha loses the one she loves most for a foolish mistake, and Shana learns the hard way what goes around comes around. This novel is filled with enough drama to make keep the reader wondering what else can happen?

I am not normally into urban novels; I find sometimes that the stories can be drowned out by very specific details about things that don?t make the story more interesting. However, the novel Chyna Black pleasantly surprised me.

Forgive Us This Day is a wonderfully told story about Alese and Michael Dean. The reader is given a glimpse of what appears to be a perfect life. However, very quickly several severe blows are dealt to this couple. Alese has to make some very realistic choices regarding her marriage and commitment to her mother. Michael has made a choice that could cause his world to fall apart around him. If these issues are not enough, the adoption process of their daughter Bianca may be in jeopardy.

I found Menage's Way to be a bit overshadowed by the constant sex scenes. I think the plot and characters were strong enough to build an interesting story without so many sex scenes. While I am no master at the drug dealing game, from my research, the content seems to be realistic and believable. Menage Unique Legend is the main character. We travel with him through his life of Benjamins, name brand everything and promiscuity. This combination proceeds to turn his life upside down. One this journey, he learns that material possessions and easy sex is not a part of obtaining true love and a fulfilling life.

In the 1950s when a girl's innocence was sacred, Elizabeth Turner's was stolen. Though her mother is supportive, her father closes himself off from her emotionally. Through the love of the memorable MaDear and Loretha (Elizabeth's mother), Elizabeth is allowed to grow into womanhood and raise her child. Johnny Turner is now a grown man and if finally told the truth about what happened to his mother and who his real father is. Though this secret is 36 years old, can Johnny find it in his heart to forgive and embrace the choices made for him for his best interests?

Alvin Morrow explains the methods of the Willie Lynch Letter in terms that anyone can understand. The ability to break down these effects are uncanning. With each new chapter, Black men and women are able to see how these brutal mental conditioning methods first used in slavery, affect each Black person today. Also, honest solutions are provided to promote unity, allow for healing, and ultimately freedom from these damaging mentalities.

In New York where everything is mean, we are introduced to Supreme and Glory. Both are living their life in the streets. Supreme is known for taking what he wants and accepting nothing less. When his illegal activities might catch up with him, he is forced to leave New York behind. He starts over in Washington D.C. only to meet Glory, his match in the love game. In time, Supreme falls in love with Glory and wins the confidence of her older brother who is a major player in the D.C. drug game. Supreme accepts being an enforcer for Unique, only to find that his past exploits are catching up to him after all.

Finally is a collection of poems that is music to the soul. Rolanda Pyle has taken what many of us feel and put it into written word. I felt her spirit with each word. My personal favorite is Finally.
