The Story of Two Boys Growing up in the Other America
The devastating story of brothers Lafayette and Pharoah Rivers, children of the Chicago ghetto, is powerfully told here by Kotlowitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter who first met the boys in 1985 when they were 10 and seven, respectively. Their family includes a mother, a frequently absent father, an older brother and younger triplets. We witness the horrors of growing up in an ill-maintained housing project tyrannized by drug gangs and where murders and shootings frequently occur. Lafayette tries to cope by stifling his emotions and turning himself into an automaton, while Pharoah first attempts to regress into early childhood and then finds a way out by excelling at school. Kotlowitz's affecting report does not have a ``neat and tidy ending. . . . It is, instead, about a beginning, the dawning of two lives.'' These are lives at a crossroads, not totally without hope of triumphing over their origin.

A Research-Based Program of Relaxation, Learning and Self-Esteem For Children
Stress in a child's life needs to be addressed and controlled to ensure healthy development. Ready...Set...R.E.L.A.X. not only provides a review of the causes of stress, it equips children with the tools to overcome stress while promoting learning, imagination, and selfesteem. After giving an overview of relaxation methods, parents can have their kids read or listen to more than 60 stories whose themes emphasize relaxation and help in the areas of creativity, peer pressure, and overcoming test anxiety. The techniques outlined in this book help children reduce stress and encourage learning.
SEND 'EM SOUTH
Author:Alan N. Kay
(Young Heroes of History, Book 1)
Send ’Em South is an adventure story that brings the two conflicting worlds of North and South together. In the years just prior to the Civil War, David Adams grows up in the middle of two worlds. His father is an Irish immigrant who is ridiculed and ignored by the people of Boston. His mother is an abolitionist who has dedicated her life to ending slavery. David, as the son of these two, finds himself an outcast amongst his friends and even his family.
Lisa has been a slave all of her life. Her mother was sold when she was 10 years old. Her father appears to have given up all hope of seeing her mother again. When he takes Lisa’s hand one day and whisks her off the plantation, no one is more surprised than she. Then, with the help of several white and black abolitionists, the pair head north to the city of Boston where they hope to find Lisa’s long lost mother. The only problem is that slave catchers are hot on their trail and are determined to send Lisa and her father back to the plantation. Only a young boy named David Adams stands in their way.
Send ’Em South is a story of love and dedication, hatred, and sacrifice. It is the story of Lisa’s love for her father and the sacrifices he makes for her, of David’s need to find acceptance in the confusing world he lives in, and of bravery that two children can have when surrounded by hatred, deception, and danger
