The Family II Life After Death

Author:Antonne M. Jones

The Family (Book 1) is about four young black men on a quest for money, power and fame. "Ghetto Glory", as we in the hood call it. In route to achievement, some unexpected obstacles interfere with the mission. Obstacles such as murder, betrayal and greed.

Excerpts from The Family II...
You're out of your mind Lauryn. You sound like a disgruntled and scorned Black woman and you need to get over it. You thought I was going to die in jail, didn't you? Now you're married to this loser and unhappy, so you take it out on me. You divorced me, three years after I got locked-up, remember?" 'You arrogant and shallow jerk. That's what you think this is all about? It has nothing to do with that. It has all to do with what you did in the past and how I'm paying the price for it now.' "What are you talking about?" 'I'm talking about living with HIV. You fool.' The moment she said that, the room got dark and everything seemed to stop. 'Yes, I'm living with HIV because you were out screwing all kinds of women without protection. I may die soon. Get out of my house! Get out!' She ushered me out the door and I just sat in the car stunned. I wasn't sure of what to say or do, or if Shatora had overheard the argument. She got in the car without asking what her mother and I were arguing about, so I gathered she wasn't listening. Unfortunately, I couldn't enjoy our outing because there were too many thoughts running through my mind. Was I infected with HIV? Whom did I get it from? Did I infect my wife? Should we get tested? My world had come to a thunderous halt. All this time, Lauryn was infected and never said anything, blew my mind. I always assumed HIV and AIDS was a gay man's disease, or only contracted by intravenous drug users. Not knowing what to do, I called Carmen and begged her to come home and promised to straighten up.

Black Marks

Author:Kirsten Hoyte
Black Marks is the story of Georgette Collins, who wakes up one day in her early thirties to discover she had no past. Everyone has had the experience of not quite fitting in at some point in their lives, but Georgette has grown up in between worlds: black and white, gay and straight, wealthy and working class, West Indian and American.
Throughout, Georgette tries to piece together these fractured worlds from her grandmother's stories and her own fragmented memories, but she cannot make sense of her experiences. Each reinvention of herself is more disastrous than the last. Now, Georgette, an African-American librarian, is completely isolated; she is floating, unable to make connections with family, friends, and colleagues. Many mornings she wakes to find a man in her bed with no idea how he got there. Days are spent in a self-created bubble, which both protects her and separates her from others
The narrative weaves back and forth in time, through Georgette's childhood in Jamaica to her teenage immersion in Boston and New York nightlife, and into the reclusive silence of her adulthood, of the library. The story's ambiguities remind the reader that there are not always easy answers for why one person may suffer, and neither are there always identifiable paths to recovery. Although depression and sadness play major roles in Georgette's life, her first-person voice is intelligent, funny, and capable of both warmth and irony.

The Wave

Author:Walter Mosley

Walter Mosley fans are in for a surprise with The Wave - no more Easy Rawlins or Fearless Jones, but for the third time this author ventures into the world of science fiction. It's his 19th novel, and I've lost count of his awards, an O. Henry, a Grammy, a Sundance Institute Risk-Taker Award. There seem to be few writers who can switch genres as flawlessly as he does. Simply goes to prove what we've known all along - Walter Mosley is one terrific wordsmith.
With The Wave we meet Errol Porter who is receiving what he believes to be crank phone calls. Perhaps, he thinks, someone in a mental institution has gotten his number and put it on redial. With the first call all he heard were moans and grunts. It was a man's voice. With the second call he heard single words - cold, naked. There's cause for concern when the caller claims to be Errol's father who died and was buried in 1996.

Cinnamon Kiss

Author:Walter Mosley

Easy Rawlins is back in Walter Mosley's tenth novel in the series and is better than ever. He is so polished, shrewd, cool in the best sense of the word and altogether human. This time he is faced with every parent's nightmare, the possibility of a young child's dying from a rare illness. Most of the action is about his efforts-- by whatever means available-- to raise the necessary cash for expensive treatment for his daughter Feather in a hospital in Switzerland. Easy's woman Bonnie-- or is she?-- is back, along with his buddy Mouse and a host of other characters we remember from earlier novels. Mr. Mosley is nothing if not creative and we'd better not take him for granted. This is evident in the way this story ends; we see that Easy will go in a different direction in the next novel in the series.

After landing a dead-end job at a donut shop, Lady wonders how she will ever make it out of a six-dollar-an-hour existence. Then she meets Cream, the leader of one of the most notorious gangs in New York City. Cream quickly decides that he wants to own this beauty and recruits her for his prostitution ring. Lady joins the Cream Team, but she has no intentions of working the streets forever. In fact, she plans to run the show and she's willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen. But the streets don't love nobody, and it's not long before Lady is deep in a game she can no longer control. The question is: Will she be able to get out of the game before the game claims her?

What I Do Is Taboo

This collection contains two short erotic tales. In the first story, "Maggie's Madness," Maggie, a 22 year old female in her second marriage, finds alternative ways to be pleased sexually. Seemingly her husband is too busy to offer her fulfilling sexual pleasure. In the final story, "Feening in the Summer of 1988," readers go on several sexual romps with Mr. Rourke, a true player, but what happens when a player falls in love?

WHAT I DO IS TABOO has some interesting escapades experienced by the main characters. Apparently, nothing is too taboo to explore if the participants are willing and able. The style of writing is interesting because Yonder places poems, flashbacks and even side stories within each tale, making it unique. At times, the narrator was funny enough to make me laugh out loud. However, as far as erotica is concerned I am not sure Yonder reached the mark. As freaky as some of the sex scenarios were, they were just that-freaky, not necessarily taboo. And with the second story, the author wanted readers to actually believe Mr. Rourke had fallen in love, but because the characters were one-dimensional, it just didn't seem plausible. This is a quick read and although not as erotic as I like, it was entertaining. Readers who enjoy stories about intimate trysts will find these pleasurable but those who like more foreplay will finish wanting more.
