Prison Stories

Author:Seth M. Ferranti

In 1991, facing a mandatory sentence of at least 20 years for leading a small LSD dealing operation in suburban Virginia, Seth Ferranti faked his own suicide and went on the lam, a desperate stunt that tacked on an extra year to his bid when he was eventually caught two years later. Since then, the self-described "prisoner in the war on drugs" has spent his time chronicling the prison experience for various magazines and writing this very lightly fictionalized novel. Prison Stories follows a newly incarcerated white suburban drug dealer who tries to maintain his hustle in a federal penitentiary while avoiding the business end of a shank. Ferranti intersperses his slang-heavy narrative with slice-of-prison life vignettes that show why snitching is always a bad idea, how to turn baby oil into an ugly little weapon and how to gain and keep respect through equal measures of politeness and violence. Don't expect a heartwarming story of redemption; expect an unbelievably addictive tale of how things really operate in prison, and how one man is surviving it. A- Ben Goldstein --Giant Magazine

We've all heard - if not lived - grim tales of prison life, but you can almost smell the stench of a month in "the hole" through actual inmate Seth Ferranti's words. According to him, the daily ruckus on his cell block is a reflection of street life, though on a smaller scale, and he's bound to make believers out of most readers. The story of Ferranti's life behind bars is interesting, to say the least, as threats from correction officers and rival inmates force him to make difficult (and often regrettable) choices to stay alive and build his rep. Plenty of blood is shed in this intense record of the harsh realities of the penal system. Even in prison, drug-dealing and gambling are profitable - though dangerous - pastimes, and a painful death is assured for snitches. For the sake of Ferranti's safety, one can only hope that he changed the names to protect the not-so-innocent - Blaine Martin --Smooth Magazine

Author:Heather Hunter, Michelle Valentine

What makes a teen yearn to be a porn star diva? Porn star Hunter answers that question with the full-frontal portrait of Simone Young, a young New Yorker who decides to gain control of her life through selling her body. Simone's introduced to the life by Carmen, a former classmate turned prostitute who persuades Simone to get her freak on. Not content with being a hooker, Simone works at a hip-hop club, moves on to a massage parlor, becomes a stripper and, eventually, a porn superstar in L.A. By age 21, she retires, deciding the adult entertainment industry, numerous affairs and substance abuse will never fulfill her. Hunter and Valentine's depiction of Simone's descent into a brittle, hedonistic world leaves little to the imagination, and Simone's transformation in the resolution remains moving if out of left field. The Ex Files

Author:Victoria Christopher Murray

In Murray's powerful testament to Christian fellowship and friendship (after 2006's A Sin and a Shame), four members of an L.A. prayer group find spiritual growth and heartache as they struggle with broken dreams. Drawn together by Hope Chapel's Pastor Beverly Ford, these African-American women stand at crossroads in their lives. For Sheridan Hart it's trying to choose between marrying her lover or going back to the bisexual Ex who left her for a man. Kendall Stewart deals with her rage over her younger sister and Ex falling in love, but must make a life or death choice when her sister becomes seriously ill. Asia Ingram wants revenge on the father of her six-year-old daughter, a retiring, married LA Laker who's decided to end their decade-long affair. Vanessa Martin copes badly in the aftermath of her husband Reed's shocking suicide, grappling with a growing depression that threatens her ability to go on. The engrossing transitions the women go through make compelling reading, but some readers might find some of Pastor Ford's wisdom a little off as she assures Sheridan that Quentin, her bi-sexual Ex, "wasn't born that way." Still, Murray's vivid portrait of how faith can move mountains and heal relationships should inspire her growing conservative fan base.

Sex Chronicles II

Zane's erotic short stories have captivated the minds of both sexes and all races. The Sex Chronicles: Shattering the Myth did exactly what its title implies -- exploded the myth that men are more sexual in nature than women, and that African-American women in particular are inhibited compared to their female counterparts of other cultures. Her audience is growing by leaps and bounds, nurtured by her Internet site and her previous bestselling titles, including The Heat Seekers, her debut in hardcover. Zane knows exactly what her readers want, and in Gettin' Buck Wild she gives them some of her most provocative prose to date. Her characters and settings run the gamut from committed, monogamous couples looking to experiment, to the wild single sisters who belong to a very unconventional sorority. Zane tells the story of a high-paid multi-tasking career woman who gets her groove back in "When Opposites Attract," a couple who try something new in "The Subway -- A Quickie," and a new way of celebrating Christmas in "The Santa Claus." She spices up real-life scenarios with over-the-top sexual fantasy and ultimately gives her readers the best time they've ever had between the pages of a book. With all-new characters and settings, Gettin' Buck Wild is Zane's hottest collection of stories yet. Smart, witty and extremely sexy, this second volume of Sex Chronicles is tailored to women -- but perfect for lovers to share.
