Author:Daniels Santiago

Danielle Santiago's Little Ghetto Girl: A Harlem Story was an Essence magazine #1 bestseller, a compelling portrayal of the challenges young women face in ghettos across America. Now Santiago's putting it down again, better than ever, moving on from the little girl to the grown woman in Grindin', the second in her trilogy of Harlem Stories.
Holding the story down in Grindin' is Kennedy Sanchez, a twenty-two-year-old beautiful, talented, street-smart single mom with a heart of gold. After partying and "grindin'" in Las Vegas, and clearing more than $100,000 and a bag of diamonds by robbing rich, white gamblers, Kennedy and her cousin Nina fly back home to New York. Later that night, Kennedy gets a call informing her that Nina is being beaten up by her boyfriend -- and it's worse than any time before. Kennedy rushes over to help, but it's too late: Nina dies in Kennedy's arms after making her promise to take care of her children.
Kennedy steps up to the plate, now becoming the mother of three more kids and moving them into a brownstone in Harlem. She knows she needs to refocus. Her opportunity to do so comes in the form of Chaz, a successful hip-hop artist who sees star quality written all over her.
She's offered a chance to become a rapper and leaves the streets behind -- or at least shifts to another kind of grind. Once she's in the music world, she realizes that the setting may have changed, but the hustle remains the same.

What They Want

Author:Omar Tyree

Successful male model Terrance Mitchell had no plans at all to ever settle down. For what? Being single was freedom, where relationships were binding. Nor did he have any plans for a family, with snotty-nosed kids running around, cramping his style, and eating for free. To hell with all that.
Terrance loved his life as is. He was a well-traveled, good-looking male model in an industry full of insatiable and insecure beautiful women. Women who adored him and were willing to do almost anything to prove it. He liked it that way. And he had become accustomed to it.
Then it happened. One of his beautiful women fell over the cuckoo's nest and shattered his peace of mind. From then on, Terrance could never again lead the blind mice with his flute without feeling guilty about it. He realized that women had a purpose for him. That they had dreams and aspirations that included his participation. Of course, a man in his position, constantly surrounded by beautiful women, would know this already. But just because he knew what women wanted didn't mean he was capable of or willing to give it to them. Nevertheless, Terrance suddenly felt inspired to try.

Secret Lovers

Author:Patricia Anne Phillips, Maxine Thompson and Michelle McGruff

I liked all the stories, but I really loved the story by Maxine Thompson, called Second Chances. This is such a wonderful love story, complete with reversals, surprises, and shocks.

I enjoyed how Caprianna, the main character, was able to rise like the phoenix, after a devastating event wherein she became a victim of crime and lost everything. And I fell in love with the male lead, Elijiah. I liked the sensitivity and substance of the character.

Like Job, Caprianna's faith is tested, and she has to find the strength to see if life will give her a second chance at happiness, at love, and at renewed health.

The dialogue is fast, witty, and thought-provoking. The story line is full of depth.

This is a different type of romance in that its realism is so stark, you will feel like you're right in the middle of the action. The story line follows the four seasons. In the fall, Caprianna's life falls apart, in the winter she goes through hell, in the spring, she begins to re-bloom again, and in the summer, she finds new life and new love.

Letters to a Young Brother

Author:Hill Harper

Most people associate Hill Harper with Hollywood, as he's appeared in dozens of films and television shows. But he is just as comfortable in a school auditorium, rousing groups of students with his unique style of real-life wisdom. Having addressed thousands of high-school and middle- school students over the years, Hill is ready to take his message to an even wider audience. Letters to a Young Brother is drawn from the humbling life lessons he learned on the road to his Ivy League education and beyond. Inspired by the countless letters and e-mails he has received from teens, Hill Harper set out to write a series of letters to young people that would catch the attention of even the most reluctant readers.
The result is a motivational but approachable book full of encouragement on a wide array of hot topics, particularly among young African-American and Hispanic men. From the challenges of getting a good education and making it through college to the media's destructive emphasis on material wealth, Letters to a Young Brother delivers eye-opening answers. Reminiscent of Marian Wright Edelmans New York Times bestseller, The Measure of Our Success: A Letter to My Children and Yours, Hill Harper's words will resonate for years to come.

Inspiration for any young person, May 23, 2006
Review: V. Taylor (Aurora, CO) -
My 13-yr old grandson is reading this book to me and the advice in this book is really hitting home with him since it's pretty much the same things I have been telling him. This is a young man who doesn't like to read at all, but will volunteer to sit down for our reading sessions with this book. Hill not only has academic credentials but street cred too which hits it off with young black men. I recommend this book highly. Vivian, Aurora, CO

Secret Society

Celess and her best friend, Tina, "runnin' game" on dudes with dollars is a full-time occupation. Somewhere just out of their teens, tricked out in Chanel, Chlo?nd D&G, the "flyest girls out there" hit the fights, the games and the clubs, looking for men who like to spend their cash. By page nine, Celess has a trio of men to meet her needs: "O was my hustler from Delaware. James was my baller from Philly. Tariq was my businessman from New Jersey." And by page 20, Celess reveals the secret of the title: she and Tina are men, too. Readers know from the preface that their story ends tragically?but which of their lovers, when he finds out the truth, will reach for his gun? Miasha's narrative has few developed scenes, and "We had a brief conversation about my outfit and how good I looked in it" is pretty much what passes for dialogue. But beneath the litany of shopping and screwing, lying and dodging, the tension bubbles?Tina and Celess know they're playing a dangerous game. As James bugs out, O gets killed and Tariq vanishes, Celess gets her nails into Darrell, who's married; Terry, who's white (and likes Celess's male parts); and Michael, who really loves her. But this isn't a fairy tale. Scandalous and engrossing, this debut from Miasha (just one name; she lives in the Atlanta suburbs with her spouse and child) shows her to be a writer to watch

Author:Scot Poulson Bryant
Following in the footsteps of such bestselling, taboo-breaking books as Randall Kennedy's Nigger and J. L. King's On the Down Low, Hung brings a topic previously discussed only in intimate settings out into the open. In a brilliant, multilayered look at the pervasive belief that African American men are prodigiously endowed, Scott Poulson-Bryant interweaves his own experiences as a black man in America with witty analyses of how black male sexuality is expressed in books, film, television, sports, and pornography. Hung is a double entendre, referring not only to penis size but to the fact that black men were once literally hung from trees, often for their perceived sexual prowess and the supposed risk it posed to white women. As a poignant reminder, he begins his book with a letter to Emmett Till, the teenager who was lynched in Mississippi in the mid-1950's for whistling at a white woman. For Poulson-Bryant and other men of his generation, society's deep-seated obsession with the sexual powers of black men has had an enormous, if often deceptive, influence on how they perceive themselves and on the assumptions made by others. His tales of his sexual encounters with both sexes, along with anecdotes about the lives of various friends and colleagues, are wryly and at times shockingly revealing. Enduring racial perceptions have shaped popular culture as well, and Poulson-Bryant offers a thorough, thought-provoking look at media-created images of the Well-Hung Black Male. He deftly deconstructs movies like Mandingo and Shaft, articles in the popular press, and edgy works like Robert Mapplethorpe's Black Book, while also providing distinctive profiles of icons like porn star Lexington Steele and rapper L.L. Cool J. A scintillating mixture of memoir and cultural commentary, Hung is the first and only book to take on phallic fixation and uncover what lies below. Readers may be scandalized, but they'll also have the plenty to ponder about America's view on how black men measure up.

Black Marks

Author:Kirsten Hoyte
Black Marks is the story of Georgette Collins, who wakes up one day in her early thirties to discover she had no past. Everyone has had the experience of not quite fitting in at some point in their lives, but Georgette has grown up in between worlds: black and white, gay and straight, wealthy and working class, West Indian and American.
Throughout, Georgette tries to piece together these fractured worlds from her grandmother's stories and her own fragmented memories, but she cannot make sense of her experiences. Each reinvention of herself is more disastrous than the last. Now, Georgette, an African-American librarian, is completely isolated; she is floating, unable to make connections with family, friends, and colleagues. Many mornings she wakes to find a man in her bed with no idea how he got there. Days are spent in a self-created bubble, which both protects her and separates her from others
The narrative weaves back and forth in time, through Georgette's childhood in Jamaica to her teenage immersion in Boston and New York nightlife, and into the reclusive silence of her adulthood, of the library. The story's ambiguities remind the reader that there are not always easy answers for why one person may suffer, and neither are there always identifiable paths to recovery. Although depression and sadness play major roles in Georgette's life, her first-person voice is intelligent, funny, and capable of both warmth and irony.
