Writers of the Future
|
Author:L. Ron Hubbard
The 21st volume in the anthology series sponsored by Hubbard's Writers of the Future program may contain no knockouts, but more than a few of its 15 tales by emerging SF and fantasy writers show real talent. John Schoffstahl's exciting "In the Flue" extrapolates from today's Mid east headlines. David W. Goldman cleverly examines writers and writing in "The Story of His Life." Sidra M. S. Vitale's "My Daughter, the Martian" is a realistic study of a human colony on Mars from a young adult viewpoint. Andrew Gudgel's "The Firebird" scores as brief and stylized fantasy, as does Cat Sparks's "Last Dance at the Sergeant Majors' Ball" as poignant virtual reality. The illustrations that accompany each story are promising if not up to the quality of the distinctive Frank Frazetta art that graces the cover.

QUEENS REIGNS SUPREME FAT CAT, 50 CENT,AND THE RISE of the HIP-HOP HUSTLER
|
Author:Ethan L. Brown
Bloody chronicle of the '80's-era cocaine hustlers of southeast Queens and their influence on the rap music industry. New York magazine music editor Brown recounts the triumphs and travails of Queens, New York, drug hustlers Lorenzo "Fat Cat" Nichols, Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff and Thomas "Tony Montana" Mickens, among others, and the appropriation of their mystique and violent approach to doing business by the hip-hop artists who came of age in their shadow. Brown does a thorough job delineating the savage milieu of the crack-devastated communities and their code of pitiless, often pointless violence, drawing on copious wiretaps and courtroom transcripts, search-warrant affidavits and interviews with those involved to shed new light on the murders of Tupac Shakur and RUN-DMC's Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell, as well as the shooting of superstar rapper 50 Cent, who emerges from the narrative as a singularly effective maneuverer and survivor. From the numbing iterations of brutal murders and assaults (southeast Queens would send Sam Peckinpah running to his mommy) arise a few compelling voices: Entrepreneur Russell Simmons speaks eloquently on the insanity and tragic waste of the lifestyle, while embattled Murder Inc. record exec Irving "Irv Gotti" Lorenzo's self-serving monologues have the piquant volubility of a Tarantino monologue. The book may have benefited from a larger historical perspective-there is no mention of the mafia's analogous involvement in the music industry of the '50's and '60's, which seems an odd omission-and the endless intramural beefs and reprisals, recounted in Brown's dry, journalistic style, become a bit claustrophobic. Imperfectly executed secret history of the hustlers and blood feuds that continue to inform gangster rap.

MONEY POWER RESPECT
|
Author:Erick S. Gray
My name is Ricky Johnson, and this is my story....
Where I'm from, South Jamaica Queens, making the wrong choices in life can actually make you feel like you made all the right moves, especially when you're driving around in high-end cars, spending money like it's water, and sporting the latest trends and fashions.

But unfortunately my lavish lifestyle came to an end, and I ended up doing a bid upstate. As a man, I should've learned from my mistakes and done right with my life. But the thing is, I got the devil, disguised as my best friend Kinko, addressing me in one ear, and then I got my family and my girl preaching to me in the next ear.
