All Woman
By: Denise Campbell
January 23, 1999
Being a woman is like being locked in a transparent ball
A never ending circle of no beginnings or endings
And no one hears our call
Being a woman sometimes feel like a rat trap
That cramps down on the very essence of our being
Taking us through living nightmares that men have never seen
We must be beautiful
Thin and tall
But the demands are endless
Because that's not all
Be poised
Stand straight
Pretty pretty pretty
Is a lady's pass through this life's pearly gate
Speak well
Be educated
Fight through this world or stand there naked
Naked of pride, integrity or dreams
Leaving us void in our silent screams
Be polite
Don't talk foul
As if this world didn't teach us how
Be smart
Be witty
The perfect entertainment piece
And not one seems to care
That our pillow is our only release
Everybody's looking to go half on something
They want us to give all
And they give nothing
They want us to invest our hearts, our souls
The very essence of our being
They want us to take them places that they have never seen
Never mind paying
We must now take up the check
This is the nineties girl and I ain't finished yet
Be girlfriend, mother, family woman and wife
If you can't be all
He thinks he's wasting his life
Best friends
Party girl
Career and pretty curl
Chest out
Tummy in
Remember thin thin thin
24 hours a day
7 days a week
Time just goes and goes and you still haven't gotten any sleep
Hold on to your seat girl
The best part is yet to come
Because before the night is over
He's still gonna want some
This is where we must scream and pant
Melting from his touch
Because his fragile egos
Really ain't worth that much
With all this going on trying to remember to breathe
The cycle of the circle closes in on us
And must still replant the seed
Being a woman is like being locked in a transparent ball
A never ending circle of no beginning or endings
And no one hears our call.

TRIBUTE TO C&B;'s DIANE
by HEATHER COVINGTON
For the dedication and tireless energy
you bestowed onto the literary world
For the quest of donations sought
on educating young boys and girls
For the colorful display of authors
and their books, a legend grand
Your heart only needs healing now
to let the world understand
And now that you know we appreciate
your hardwork and loving support
The ladies and men of C&B;
Marguerite Press & Disilgold
Just want to say,
" We love you alot!"

Im approached by a child of small tan face,
With a head of wild curly locks all over the place.
Greetings, little sister, I said with a smile,
Would you like to sit with me and talk for a while?
She skipped on over and sat right down,
Yet on her brow she wore an amusing frown.
What troubles you today, I began by saying,
Why are you not with the other children playing?
Im not like them, she explained to me,
But in your face my image I see.
My mamas as white as a lily but my father I do not know,
The faces that surround me are white wherever I go.
The others call me names I do not understand,
Some I cannot say, one of them is tar man.
Could you tell me please, how could this be?
Do you see black when you look at me?
I patted her hand and for a moment looked away,
Studying on the words that I should say.
When I look at you I see the queen of the Nile,
A warrior princess with grace and style.
A fresh new desert lotus awaiting full bloom,
Anxious to release its fragrant perfume.
I see a colorful bird with its wings stretched in flight,
And the bright moonbeam as it pierces the dark of night.
You are a daughter of Zion disconnected from her own,
Subjected to the lifestyle of those of little tone.
Let no one diminish your beauty or make you hang your head,
Be proud of the blackness born within your soul, instead.

Man and Child
October 21, 1994
A man and his child
An unexpected bond formed through love and hardship
You could see them together like clockwork
Holding hands
Laughing
He touches him with a kind of gentleness
Preserved for those who triumph
And shower him with care
New to the life of fatherhood he seeks
Only to master the art of growing
Instilling in his child all that he knows of commitment and trust
Because mistrust and misunderstanding is a man's enemy
And one day his child will become a man
So for now he sits by his child's bedside
And enjoy the simple pleasure of his sleep
For now he lay awake at nights
Sleepless nights
And endless dreams of longing
Longing to smile again with a brilliance that only the sun possess
Because Fridays are happy days
It's the day that proceeds the three days
He can indulge in his child's desires
When he can feel the quiet anxiety
A skipped heartbeat as his hands glide slowly
Through the young boy's hair
When he can listen to sighs merging together simultaneously
Because he's breath of his breath
And life of his life
And one cannot exist without the other
Because they exist together
And live for each other
And he's a better man for it
And his child will be a better man for it
Because they are man and child
Missing each other
Co-existing together
Because they are__Man and child

X Factor
What is X?
The unknown factor
I am X
Why should I matter?
Who knows of me
Who knows that I exist
X has no value
Is this it?
Is this what I amount to
Is this all that I am
An unknown factor
Not a woman
Not a Man
Am I damned?
X is my name
Though I am not ashamed
X is my claim to fame
Exact, extravagant, exuberant
Exciting, excellent, exhilarating
Extraordinary, extreme, exclusive
Excessive, exemplifying, expeditious
Exorbitant, expressive, extensive
And I exhaled!
You can call me X
And I will wear it proud
As a glorious crown
And I will let it resound
I am the new found master
The known, X factor

WEPT STREAMS
Dee Freeman
I wept streams for that junky
Trying to get his high on
I wept cause, he's not caring that the bed he now lie on
Could certainly be the bed he die on
He buy it Then try it
Now rely on it Soon die on it
I wept rivers for the sistah walking the streets
I wept cause, she trying to find a few tricks
So she can get a real fix,
Not realizing she at risks
With those trying only to get their kicks.
She don't respect it Won't protect it
They compel it So she sell it
I wept oceans for that young man
Who now sit behind bars
I wept cause, he gotta
Repay his debt to the stars
And stripes for taking a few jars
From the shelves---maybe a pack of cigars,
Hoping to turn his scars into stars
To improve a life before the bars
He stole them Then sold them
Now sitting, Behind bars that hold him
I wept streams for that mother
Who now has to be on welfare
I wept cause, she live in a place that don't even care
How she and her children fare
No, it ain't fare that no one else care
Who will help them out of this despair?
Each day she repeat-same ole, same ole
Then, she can't sleep So she also weep
Can you now understand how
I wept oceans, rivers, streams
For those who lost their dreams
I wept streams, or so it seems
Let's wipe and dry every weeping eye
Do more than just sit idly by
Generate some bright sunbeams
Create some mo'e dreams
Be about action, cause we can do this as a team
We just gotta damn up the causes of all these weeping streams
Peace and Blessings
