FELLOW AUTHOR & SCRIBE,
Brother 2 Brother Literary Symposium, a non-profit organization, is seeking author participation for the 2006 Brother 2 Brother Literary Symposium, which will be held on April 7-8 in Dallas, Texas. (8:30 am ? 2:30 pm Fri., Sat. 10:00 ? 3:00 pm). The Black Academy of Arts and Letters Incorporated, 650 S. Griffin Street.
With less than half of the city?s public school children scoring below grade level on standardized English Language Arts tests, it is clear that young people are simply not being endowed with a very fundamental life skill: the ability to read. Adults with poor reading skills are not employable, having difficulty competing for low-paying labor jobs, particularly in today?s harsh economy.
For four years, a coalition of African American fiction writers has been working to address this problem by promoting literacy and a love for reading, particularly among young Minority and African American children, with special emphasis on African American males. This is done chiefly through the annual event, the Brother 2 Brother Literary Symposium. Held previously in Atlanta (2002), Kansas City (2003), and Brooklyn, New York (2005) the event consists of a weekend of panel discussions, workshops, and most importantly, books, all free to the community. The organization has also been instrumental in the establishment of book clubs for young black men nationwide (including two in New York), with a long term goal to reach 100, and recently established a Directory of Writers as a resource for schools and youth organizations interested in hosting writers to hold book discussions. Also reaching out to correctional facilities and bookstores, our vision is assist in the rehabilitation process with the cultivation of literature. We welcome your participation in this effort, as well as being a panelist or moderator at the seminar.
As torch-carrying members of a prestigious fraternity of scribes, your participation in the forthcoming symposium will help to ensure that this event will resonate in the youth development community for years to come.
Though cognizant of busy schedules and time constraints, confirmation of your participation is needed by January 15th, 2006. Immediate response is needed, as we will commence in conference preparation upon receipt. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via e-mail at [email protected]. At this time we are able to provide rooms at double occupancy. We are finalizing fund-raising and if the funds permit, we will take care of airline tickets for those out of the Dallas Metro area. This will not only bring you incredible exposure, but you will make history in Dallas by affecting the hopes and dreams of future youth and their attainment of reading and literacy skills. Comedian Rickey Smiley is our keynote speaker for Friday. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Vincent Alexandria
